Matthew 5: 10 - Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (NIV)

Devotional Series: The Beatitudes

Last week we took some time to reflect on the Persecuted Church, I suspect most of us don’t fall into that category. That being said we still face stigma, challenge, embarrassment and fear because of our belief in Jesus Christ.

In today’s passage, Jesus reminds us that this persecution is a blessing. When we stand up for righteousness, and look a little bit foolish in front of our friends, colleagues, family and strangers, there is a reward for us. Not just on earth, where the kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. But also, in heaven, where we can expect a reward for our faithfulness to God in the life to come.

Questions for reflection: Have I prayed to the Holy Spirit for strength to help me overcome any fear or anxiety I might face when I stand up for righteousness? Have I asked the Holy Spirit for wisdom to help me respond correctly to any stigma or embarrassment I might face?
