Matthew 5: 6 - Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. (NIV)
Devotional Series: The Beatitudes

For a long time, I never truly understood this verse. I think that is because I defined righteousness as doing the morally right thing by human standards. Using this definition it’s extremely difficult to see how we can be filled, especially when we look around and see injustice, division, immoral leaders, etc.... the list goes on. But as soon as I changed the definition of righteousness to right standing with God, it all became clear. All I had to do was remember my times in the presence of God when I had been hungry and thirsty for him and left his presence whole and feeling full. As ever, Jesus is right!
Questions for reflection: Am I hungry and thirsty for righteousness? Have I allowed the Holy Spirit to fill me and make me whole? What would it look like for me to regularly spend time in the presence of the Lord?
